Dr. Zeliff's Retirement
March 14, 2025 · Hospital News

Dear Allegheny Equine Family,
We are both delighted and a bit wistful to announce the upcoming retirement of our founding veterinarian, Dr. James Zeliff, on June 1, 2025. Many of you know Dr. Zeliff as the cornerstone of Allegheny Equine Associates, which he started in 1992 as a solo ambulatory practice. His hard work, dedication, and vision for advanced equine medicine, reproduction, and lameness services have shaped the care we provide today.
Dr. Zeliff graduated from Purdue Veterinary School in 1988. After an internship and a few years as an associate veterinarian he founded Allegheny Equine from his house in Murrysville PA. In 2009, Dr. Zeliff further expanded by building the Allegheny Equine Clinic, ensuring that hospitalized patients could receive the highest standard of care on-site. Wanting to merge veterinary expertise with robust business practices, he went on to earn his MBA in 2019. Dr. Zeliff’s leadership and passion for progress have been felt nationwide through his involvement with the AAEP and AVMA.
Under his guidance, what began as a single-doctor, one-staff practice has grown into a team of nine doctors and 15 support staff. Dr. Zeliff’s commitment to mentoring students and fellow veterinarians has left a lasting impact on the profession, and his steadfast devotion to the wellbeing of horses has enriched the entire equine community in western Pennsylvania.
As we prepare to celebrate Dr. Zeliff’s next chapter, we invite you to join us in honoring his remarkable legacy. We are compiling a photobook of memories—stories, photos, and special moments— that highlight the personal connections and milestones shared with Dr. Zeliff throughout the years. If you have any memories you’d like to contribute, please send them to us via [email protected] by April 15, 2025, so they can be included in this keepsake.
We plan to present the photobook to Dr. Zeliff at his retirement celebration in late May. Your contributions will make this tribute truly meaningful, and we thank you for being a part of his journey. We will continue his legacy of dedicated service and look forward to caring for your horses in the years to come.
With gratitude,
Nadine Salomon,
